What making bad eggs is teaching me
A short note on how to be patient with yourself when learning.
I made my (first) best eggs yet.
Not a big deal? But for someone who has been told her eggs look like burnt offerings, it is a huge deal.
Whenever I made my eggs, I either used too little oil or flipped the egg too soon. Then I would've to compensate for this early flipping by letting it burn. So all too often, my eggs would turn out shriveled and a golden brown color.
I have tried to add a pinch of ground crayfish to my eggs to make them taste better. Bad idea.
For my apparent lack of finesse with making eggs, I settled with the idea that somehow boys were the ones who made better eggs. Trust me I’ve had other ideas, like explaining my distaste for bread by how boys were the ones more obsessed with bread. I did an opinion poll to prove this.
Well, the thing about the eggs was obviously a big fat lie. My mom makes great eggs. Growing up, she always experimented with eggs, she knew how to make poached eggs, fried eggs, scrambled eggs, sunny side up. Heck, she could flip over an egg perfectly. And I grew up not learning anything.
This was basically what I made👇🏽
Notice a pattern? I burnt my yam chips too. Maybe I'm just bad at cooking :)
How I got better
To make better (scrambled) eggs, I went down a rabbit hole of YouTube videos on how to make the perfect eggs. I have done worse though, watch a YouTube video on how to make vegetable sauce, cook coconut rice, or make soup.
But that's how you learn anything really. Look for people who are great at something you are bad at and learn from them. That's how you crack the code on anything. If you want to write better, read good books. Building a business and failing at it, then learn from people who did great at it. If you want to write better code, you look for a good tutorial. Or to put it in context, a YouTube video on how to make the perfect eggs.
The Metaphor of Eggs
I have eaten the best eggs of my life and it would only get better from here. This is what I mutter to myself all week as I take on a new task I'm shit clueless about. I might be making bad eggs with this new task now but I would crack the code sooner than later.
What I make now👇🏽
Making bad eggs is teaching me patience. I guess, what I am trying to say is that nobody wakes up being great at something. You need to be patient to learn and enjoy the process. You need to be patient through the mistakes and epic fails until you master that new skill.
I am currently learning how to cornrow my own hair with a YouTube video. It's not going so well at the moment, I have been frustrated and irritated about failing at it. But that's okay.
Coolest thing on the internet!
This Twitter thread was the coolest thing I saw on the internet this week. My favorite is the avocado 🥑
and then this;
Till next weekend ❤
